Mike Thompson Votes to Continue War in Afghanistan

(March 11, 2010)

Mike Thompson voted No on House Congressional Resolution 248 [H. Con. Res. 248] directing the President to remove the United States Armed Forces from Afghanistan. 65 members of Congress voted for the Resolution, an almost unprecedented anti-war vote considering the strength of war crimes organizations in the United States of America. [List of how members voted] [text of H. Con. Res. 248]

For those of you who don't know or care not to remember, it is a war crime to invade another nation. There was no just cause of war for the American invasion of Afghanistan in 2002. The then government of Afghanistan did not invade the United States or participate in any attack on the U.S. Mike Thompson voted for the invasion and has consistently voted to fund the war. Mike Thompson is a big player in the military industrial complex scheme of things. They just love the fact that the rural, largely peace-loving area gerrymandered into the California 1st Congressional district is headed by a militarist political boss.

The war in Afghanistan, along with the extensive series of bases occupying what could fairly be called the American Empire, has crippled the economy of the United States and of Mike Thompson's district. But because Mike has such an extensive network of special interest donors to his "campaign" funds, and controls the Democratic Party apparatus in his district, there is no way he can be defeated in a Democratic Party primary. He also knows, because he has a long record of voting with Republicans on matters dear to the hearts of wealthy individuals and corporations, that he can depend on minimal Republican opposition.

I think it is the duty of citizens to stop their government from committing war crimes. While President Bush held office, although most Democrats in Congress went along with his schemes in Iraq and Afghanistan, fuzzy-brained progressive Democrats said it was just a matter of electing a Democratic majority to the House of Representatives. When that happened in 2006, and the war went on, they said it was just a matter of electing a Democratic Party to be President. When that happened in 2008, the war not only went on. Barack Obama escalated the war with the help of men like Mike Thompson.

It is the moral duty of the citizens of this district to remove Mike Thompson from office. All American war criminals should be tried on the same basis as war criminals of any other nation.
